Repointing & Masonry Repair Across East Sussex

Chaplin Building & Repointing are East Sussex's local repointing specialists — based in Eastbourne and working every week from Brighton to Bexhill. Lime and cement repointing, brick repairs, wall ties and crack stitching, specified to match your building.

Local repointers, not a national franchise

East Sussex is hard on brickwork. Driving sea winds and salt air along the coast between Brighton and Bexhill break down mortar joints years before inland buildings age, and the county's stock of Regency, Victorian and Edwardian brick needs sympathetic lime pointing — not the hard cement patches it has too often received. As an Eastbourne-based firm, we survey quickly, price honestly and turn up on site every morning.

Every job starts with a free survey. We rake out failed joints to a consistent depth, mix mortar matched to your brick — NHL lime for older walls, cement for modern cavities — and finish to the original joint profile. Where walls need more than pointing, we carry out brick repairs, replace corroded cavity wall ties, stitch settlement cracks with Helibar, and apply breathable Stormdry protection to exposed elevations.

Towns we cover in East Sussex

Repointing in Eastbourne

Our home patch. From the Regency terraces of Meads to the Edwardian semis of Hampden Park and the modern homes at Sovereign Harbour, we know Eastbourne's brickwork inside out — the soft red stock of the Old Town, the rendered seafront buildings fighting salt spray, and the 1930s cavity walls with corroding ties. As Eastbourne-based contractors we can usually survey within a few days and quote the same week.

Meads · Old Town · Seafront · Sovereign Harbour

Repointing in Bexhill

Bexhill's mix of elegant Edwardian terraces on the seafront, art deco flats and leafy 1930s suburbs gives us a varied workload — from lime repointing on the De La Warr-facing terraces to cavity wall tie replacement in Cooden and Sidley. We survey in Bexhill every week and most work is quoted and scheduled within a fortnight.

Town centre · Cooden · Sidley · St Leonards boundary

Repointing in Hastings

Hastings and St Leonards are packed with Victorian and Edwardian brickwork, from the Old Town's cottages to the grand seafront terraces of Warrior Square. Much of it is conservation-area or listed, and nearly all of it is crying out for sympathetic lime repointing rather than the cement patches it has often received. We work across Hastings, St Leonards and Silverhill weekly.

Old Town · St Leonards · Warrior Square · Silverhill

Repointing in Hailsham

Hailsham sits between the Weald and the Pevensey Levels, mixing a historic market-town core with large post-war estates. The period brick and flint around Market Street and the High Street needs sympathetic lime work, while the mid-century housing brings the cavity-wall problems of its era. We cover Hailsham, Polegate and the surrounding villages weekly.

Town centre · Hellingly · Horsebridge · Upper Dicker

Repointing in Seaford

Seaford's seafront flats and bungalows take the full force of the Channel weather, and much of the town's 1960s–70s housing stock is now reaching the age where wall ties corrode and cavity insulation fails. From Blatchington to Bishopstone, we survey and repoint across Seaford weekly, alongside our work in Newhaven and Eastbourne.

Town centre · Blatchington · Bishopstone · East Blatchington

Repointing in Newhaven

Newhaven's harbour-side terraces and hillside housing stock are a patchwork of Victorian, Edwardian and post-war brickwork — much of it battered by salt air and in need of sympathetic repair. We work across Newhaven weekly alongside our Seaford and Lewes-area projects, from repointing riverside terraces to extracting failed cavity insulation on the hill.

Town centre · Meeching · The Heights · Elphick Road area

Repointing in Brighton

Brighton and Hove contain some of the finest Regency and Victorian brickwork in the country — and some of the most abused. Whether it's a listed Brunswick Square terrace needing hand-mixed lime mortar colour-matched to its original pointing, or a student flat with blown cavity insulation, we bring the same specification discipline to Brighton that we apply across Sussex.

Kemptown · Brunswick · Hove · Preston Park

FAQs

Repointing in East Sussex — your questions

Which parts of East Sussex do you cover?
All of East Sussex, with our base in Eastbourne. We work weekly in Eastbourne, Bexhill, Hastings and St Leonards, Hailsham and Polegate, Seaford, Newhaven, Brighton and Hove, plus the surrounding villages.
Do you repoint in lime or cement mortar?
Both, and choosing correctly matters. Older (pre-1920) Sussex brickwork is usually soft and needs breathable lime mortar; harder modern brick takes cement. We match the mortar to the brick and the original joint profile — never a one-mix-fits-all patch.
How much does repointing cost in East Sussex?
Repointing is priced per square metre, typically from around £30/m² for straightforward raking-out and refilling. Scaffolding, brick repairs and wall-tie replacement add to the cost. We survey first and give a free, fixed written quote — no estimate games.
Can you work on listed buildings and conservation areas?
Yes. Much of Eastbourne Old Town, Hastings Old Town, Brighton's Regency squares and Sussex's villages fall under conservation controls, and we regularly repoint in lime to conservation standards, supplying specifications for council heritage teams where approval is needed.
How do I know if my property needs repointing?
Run a key or blade across the mortar joints. If it scratches deeper than about 5mm, or you can see gaps, receding joints, cracked render or damp patches indoors, the pointing is failing. We offer a free survey anywhere in East Sussex.
